Our Catholic tradition offers us a treasure trove of prayers which can lead us to develop a deeper relationship with God. For married couples, dipping into this treasure trove can be a comforting way to pray together, with the hopes of strengthening their marital bond and their family life. For those busy times when it may be difficult to concentrate, traditional rehearsed prayers can be the best way to focus on God. Jesus' teaching on prayer was not complicated. When asked by His disciples how to pray, he simply taught them to pray the Lord's Prayer, always a good starting point.
Other formal prayers such as the rosary, Divine Mercy Chaplet, morning or evening offerings can easily be accessed online for those who may be unfamiliar. Developing a special prayer spot in the home with a crucifix or an icon with a lit candle can add to the sense of the sacred. Gestures such as holding hands can also add intimacy. Couples should not be afraid to try different ways of praying to find what is most comfortable for them. Be confident of God's promise that where two or three are gathered in His name, He is there (Matthew 18:20) and that is the beauty of praying together!
