What better way to pray than with the Word of God? Our church believes that though the Holy Scriptures were penned by human authors, they were inspired by the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Blessed Trinity. In her wisdom, Holy Mother Church provides an order to the Scriptures through the daily Mass readings.
Couples can begin their prayer by reading the daily Scripture together. They can go deeper by sharing what the Scripture might be saying to them, either on their own or with help. There are many meditational guides and aides to help to unpack the daily readings. Some of them include physical publications such as, Magnificat, Word Among Us and Our Daily Bread to name a few. There are other online options for reflection such as Bishop Robert Barron (wordonfire.org), Dynamic Catholic, Formed (our parish has a subscription) among many others.
Over time, this process will help couples to discern how the Holy Spirit is stirring in their lives and can lead them into other forms of prayer for their marriage, their family, their community and the world! Remember that God's word is "living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword" (Hebrews 4:12). Let that word bring God's grace and blessing to your marriage.
