Enter the Darkness of the PassionThe word Tenebrae is Latin for "shadows" or "darkness." This ancient and powerful devotion is a prolonged meditation on Christ’s suffering and the weight of our redemption.
As the service progresses through a series of scripture readings and psalms, the church candles are gradually extinguished one by one. This symbolizes the abandonment of Jesus by His disciples and the encroaching darkness of the world as He walked toward Calvary.
He was pierced for our sins, crushed for our iniquity. He bore the punishment that makes us whole, by his wounds we were healed.
Isaiah 53:5
